Assistant and Affiliate Coaches

I’ve always seen coaching as a classroom. Every ride, every race, every conversation is a lesson. The trail, the road, the wind, the competitors create our environment. The bike gives us momentum. The rider brings emotions. The data communicates the science. If you pay attention, you learn something every single time.
Over the years, this became a coaching philosophy. We call it BATS — Barry Austin Training Systems. It’s not complicated. It’s simply the belief that engagement with ourselves, with our training and racing environment, and with our emotions needs to be in harmony if we want to become better riders.
When you coach through engagement, you build trust, you support development, and performance follows naturally.
That’s what matters to me.

Emma Rhymer
Brisbane-based cycling coach, mountain bike skills instructor and fitness instructor
INDEPENDANT COACH
Emma is a Brisbane-based cycling coach, mountain bike skills instructor, fitness instructor, and founder of Bike Life Coaching. I’ve been riding and racing bikes for just over 10 years, after first discovering mountain biking at the age of 41. The fact that I’d barely ridden a bike before this made mountain biking an interesting midlife “hobby” choice, to say the least, but it’s one I wouldn’t change for anything! From those early rides, where I simply struggled to stay upright, I developed my love of riding. I’ve gone on to race everything from XCO, CX, XCM, Solo 24-hour, multi-day bike packing events & even a few local enduros - but it’s the endurance events that appeal most. I consider myself to be very much an everyday athlete. Even so, I’ve achieved things that my younger self would never have believed possible and have podiumed at local, state, national and world championship (WEMBO) level in my age group. Some of my proudest moments, however, are more about PBs than podiums: learning new skills, riding 100km for the first time, riding 200km for the first time, completing 300km in a 24-hour mountain bike race and, in 2025, completing my first ABSA Cape Epic. Fast forward ten years, and it’s safe to say that off-road cycling has taken over my life! I am a mountain bike skills instructor, working with beginner to intermediate riders, and run instructor courses for AusCycling, Australia’s national cycling body. I am also an accredited cycling coach, with a particular focus on helping other everyday athletes juggle work, family, life and training. This is my passion: helping others to achieve their own fitness and performance goals – regardless of whether they are training to race, complete a cycling event, prepare for a cycling holiday, or simply want to get fitter and ride faster. This is my purpose at Bike Life Coaching: helping everyday athletes achieve their cycling goals.
