THE ART IS TO HARNESS ENERGY AND TO TRANSFORM CHAOS INTO FLOW.

Hello there,

I’m Barry Austin — a Level 3 UCI Certified Coach and UCI Certified Sporting Director, but above all, a lifelong student of the sport — and of people. For over 20 years, I’ve worked with cyclists across disciplines and levels: from passionate beginners to Olympians and World Tour professionals. Coaching, for me, has always been more than prescribing intervals. It’s about connection — to your body, your bike, your purpose, and your environment.

I coach with curiosity, care, and intention. I listen to energy. I look for what moves an athlete — not just physically, but emotionally and mentally. That’s what led me to develop the Barry Austin Training Systems (BATS) — a framework that brings together structure, personal growth, and performance. And so, in addition to coaching athletes one-on-one, I also mentor a growing network of independent coaches who align with this philosophy.

About my Training Philosophy

Training plans are just the starting point — structure provides direction, but true progress comes from connection. I encourage athletes to move beyond the numbers and engage more deeply with their process. This creates a space for mutual growth, curiosity, and continuous learning — for both the athlete and the coach.

The elements, Earth, Water, Air and Fire, shape the way I coach, think and create.  These elements reflect the invisible forces behind performance: grounding, flow, clarity, and passion. I help athletes reconnect with those forces so their training feels natural, intuitive — and powerful. They reflect the foundations of performance and bring form to invisible forces that move us.

Purpose

beneath

every move

Earth represents stability, discipline, and presence. It’s the deep foundation we return to when things feel uncertain. In training, it’s consistency. In racing, it’s control. It’s the patience to build something real.

A MIND LIKE
WATER

Calm

Responsive

Adaptable

Water teaches us flexibility, calm, and the rhythm to flow. Flow is not about avoiding resistance — it’s about moving through it. It’s how we respond to change — a sudden shift in weather, a tough training week, a race plan that needs to evolve.

Breath

Air teach use to breathe and see the bigger picture. To let go of the noise. It’s our ability to stay mentally clear under pressure, to detach from ego and ride with awareness. It helps us zoom out and understand what truly matters — in the moment, and over time.

FIRE

Courage

Rising Power

Fire is intensity, ambition, and raw energy. It’s the hunger to test yourself and the courage to go deep. Fire makes us chase, attack, commit. But it must be stoked wisely — too much, and it burns you out. Too little, and it does not quite ignite.

To translate the energy of Earth, Water, Air, and Fire into daily training, I use a practical framework called ENVIRONMENTAL ENGAGEMENT.  It brings the elemental philosophy to life through three interconnected layers of focus.

SELF ENGAGEMENT

This is how you connect with your mind, body, and bike. It involves mastering the art of using your bike as an extension of yourself, achieving optimal propulsion and flow through effective self-awareness and control.

ELEMENTAL ENGAGEMENT

This refers to your interaction with the physical course and weather conditions. Once you’ve mastered self engagement, you can begin to tackle the challenges presented by the terrain and atmosphere, developing strategies to perform at your best in any static environment.

RELATIONAL ENGAGEMENT

This is the dynamic element involving the people around you, both teammates and competitors. It’s about navigating the mental and physical interplay between yourself and others. With strong self and static engagements, you are better prepared to manage the complexities of competing, collaborating, and adapting to the behavior and tactics of those around you.
